Pune: BIG housing projects in the areas of Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority are in trouble. The Divisional Commissioner of Pune has told them not to issue completion certificates to such builders who have not made provision for drinking water supply for the occupants.
Taking the first initiate, the PMRDA has decided to review the way builders of 200 projects are implementing their projects. The PMRDA teams are going to the site of these projects to check whether they have made arrangement for ensuring drinking water to the future occupants of these buildings.
PMRDA CEO Rahul Mahiwal said they are monitoring 200 building projects in Maval, Mulshi and Haveli talukas of Pune district. ”We are verifying whether the builders of these projects have made proper arrangement so that residents will get adequate water supply,” he said.
With PMRDA on the job and the Divisional Commissionerate acting tough, many builders are in a state of tizzy. They are now worried about ensuring water supply to the future occupants of their buildings. Civic activists say many builders are constructing buildings without ensuring water supply to them. ”They construct the buildings, sell it through attractive advertisements, make fake promises of water and then disappear into thin air after taking completion certificates from PMRDA, PCMC or PMC,” said an activist.
Mahiwal said PMRDA will not issue completion certificates if builders have not made provision for drinking water supply.
The issue has been forward by Baramati MP Supriya Sule, who is the working president of the Sharad Pawar led NCP.
Sule has been repeatedly saying that construction projects should not be sanctioned if there is no guarantee of drinking water made by the builder.
Sule’s demand has found acceptance from the state government as the Divisional Commissionerate has now swung into action.
Though PMRDA has taken the first step foward, the PMC and PCMC is yet to act decisively. There are thousands of projects which are coming up in the limits of PMC and PCMC.
