BARAMATI is gearing up for a royale battle. And this time, it is in all probability going to be between Supriya Sule and her ‘Vahini’ or ‘bhabhi” Sunetra Pawar, who is the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
The possibility of a Supriya Sule versus Sunetra Pawar battle in Baramati has emerged as both Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar are moving around in their family’s traditional bastion, holding meetings, rallies and one to one interactions with party leaders.
While Sharad Pawar led NCP has already decided to re-field Supriya Sule from Baramati Lok Sabha seat, the Ajit Pawar led NCP has kept the name of its candidate under wraps.However, the publicity campaign posters which had been put up of Sunetra Pawar in Baramati have given enough indications that Sunetra Pawar is likely to be the candidate who will take on Supriya Sule, who has won from the seat for three consecutive time.
Another indication has come from Ajit Pawar who exhorted Baramatikars recently to vote only for the candidate that he will field and not fall prey to emotional appeal of his uncle.
Before daughter Supriya, Maharashtra’s most articulate English speaking politician who is accessible to one and all, father Sharad Pawar had won the Baramati seat for 14 times. And therefore, it has been a Pawar family fiefdom.
Baramati seat rarely witnessed a tough fight except in 2014 when Mahadev Jankar in initial rounds of counting had raced ahead of Supriya Sule.
Supriya Sule, the Sansad Ratna, has remained unfazed by Ajit Pawar’s bid to field her ”Vahini” This is a democracy, anyone has the right to contest elections, is Supriya Sule’s favourite line.
Supriya Sule does not say a word publicly against her ‘Vahini.” And the ”bhabi” herself rarely speaks in public. No one has heard her speaking. Then why would people vote for her….”Obviously, it is because of Ajit Pawar. He will do everything. Vahini just has to get elected. Even her victory will be ensured by Ajit Pawar,” said a BJP worker from Baramati.
Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar, who heads his NCP faction, on Saturday alleged that threats were being issued to his party workers. Though he did not name Ajit Pawar led faction, he was clearly hinting that the threats were coming from which directions or party. This is another indication that Sunetra Pawar will be contesting from Baramati seat. Maharashtra is thus in for a bitter battle on Pawar turf and between the Pawars.
