Pune: ASKING the State Government to take urgent steps for construction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Memorial in the Arabian sea in Mumbai, the State Congress said the delay in realising Maharashtra’s dream of a memorial to the great king reflected the current regime’s lack of commitment to the cause.

”On one hand, the state government keeps harping that it was ruling on the path and principles shown by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, on the other hand, the government is showing no initiative in getting the memorial work completed…The delay in setting up of the memorial was unforgivable,” said Gopaldada Tiwari, State Congress spokesperson during the Shiv Jayanti celebrations organised by the Pune Medicine Delivery Association in Sadashiv Peth area of Pune city. The Lions Club of Pune Lotus had organised a medical camp on the occasion. A two-wheeler rally was also taken out to mark the occasion.

Mr Tiwari said ‘Shiv Mudra” of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which depicts his commitment to the masses and Indian Constitution which is dedicated to people have vast similarities. ”Be it Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj or Mahatma Gandhi, their ultimate goal was to ensure equality, justice and welfare of the masses,” he said.

Criticising the Shinde-Fadnavis Government, Mr Tiwari said,”The Constitution shows the way to rajdharma. But it is impossible to expect that the state government will live up to ideals of rajdharma. Their love for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Ram Rajya is only limited to words. In reality, they do nothing on the lines of the path shown by the iconic king or ensuring a Ram Rajya..”

Mr Tiwari said the boomi pujan of the memorial was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi some 8 years ago. ”It was to be constructed at a cost of Rs 3,600 crore. When the bhoomi pujan was being done at the hands of the Prime Minister, the government had waxed eloquent about its initiative. But even 8 years later, there is no sign of the memorial coming up…Had the memorial being built, the Modi Sarkar would not have required to place its favourite ”guarantee” advertisments in the media,” he said.

Former MLC Mohan Joshi, in his speech, condemned the atrocitiies committed on women in Pune city. He highlighted the traffic problems faced by the medicine delivery boys and appealed to them to join the Wake Up Punekar campaign.

On the occasion, Prasanna Patil, president of Lions Club of Pune Lotus and Pune Congress Vyapati Cell made the introductory remarks while Pune Medicine Delivery Association president Pappu Gujar compered the event.

Shrimant Chhatrapati Rajaram Mandal president Yuvraj Nimbalkar, Chemist Association’s Sanjay Shah, advocate Swapnil Jagtap, Sanjay Aba Bibwe, Ganesh Shinde, Sanjay Kunjir, Surse Patil, Suresh Kamble, Akash Jadhav, Sanjay Kunjir, Divakar Gore, Ravi Bankar and others were present.
