Pune: PUNE division, which comprising six districts, will finally have a new divisional commissioner in Mr Chandrakant Pulkundwar. He will replace Saurabh Rao whose tenure has come under the scanner from civic activists.C
handrakant Pulkundwar, an IAS officer of 2008 batch, has earlier served as sugar commissioner and municipal commissioner of Nashik civic body. He was also the secretary of former chief minister Ashok Chavan.
With the exit of Saurabh Rao, Pune has heaved a sigh of relief. Civic activists say they never heard what Rao was doing as the divisional commissioner. ”Was Rao the divisional commissioner of Pune ? If he had something to do with Pune, what was he doing in Pune,” asked civic activist Lahu Landge.
Similar views were expressed by several activists. Kiran Dhanavate, another activist, said,”The state government should clearly define the role of divisional commissioners. Are they only supposed to enjoy the perks and salaries of the government or are supposed to seriously work on the crucial issues like water shortage and traffic problems. Divisional Commissioner’s post is supposed to above that of District Collector. But in Pune we rarely get to hear Divisional Commissioner’s doing anything concrete. We rarely got to hear that Saurabh Rao was doing anything worthwhile. If he was doing, then officials failed to publicise it. Even now, the work of the divisional commissioner should placed before the people.”
